Mitsubishi Manufacturing & Research Locations 

The Mitsubishi brand’s more technologically advanced vehicles are manufactured at the Mizushima Plant in Kurashiki, Okayama, Tokyo. All of the brand’s engines—from the Mitsubishi 4B1 to the Sirius 4G69—are built at the powertrain plant in Shiga, Japan. Additionally, there’s a car research and development center located in Okazaki, Aichi, Japan. The Mitsubishi brand also has a footing in the U.S. There’s another center for research and development located in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

  • Mitsubishi was founded in 1870. 
  • In the early 1900s, Japan mass-produced its first car, which was the Mitsubishi Model A. 
  • The Mitsubishi Motor Sales Corporation was founded in the 1960s. 
  • In the 1970s. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. became the sole shareholder of Mitsubishi Motors Corporation.
  • In the 1980s, Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America Inc. was established with the Mitsubishi Corporation as a joint capital investment. 
  • Shortly after, Mitsubishi Motor Sales Corporation took over its operations. 
  • In 2015, Mitsubishi Motors North America ceased car production operations. 
  • Then, in 2016, MMC and Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. joined in an alliance. 
  • Today, Mitsubishi is owned by the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance.
