The history of Mitsubishi went in a different direction in the 1980s as Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America Inc. was established with the Mitsubishi Corporation as a joint capital investment. Not long after, Mitsubishi Motor Sales Corporation took over operations, and in 2015, car production at Mitsubishi Motors North America was terminated. 

In 2016, MMC and Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. came together in a business alliance.
